![]() For most purposes, the psql command line works just fine at the beginning. The information above is independent of the client you use. The port will be 5432 unless it was changed, typically at database startup. By default, there will be two visible databases, one named postgres and one using your user name. If you install Postgres on the same computer as the client, the host will be localhost. Several of these have well-known default values. ![]() The key things to know to connect to your Postgres database are its host, its assigned port, the database that you’d like to use initially, and your username and password. If I were doing this exercise on Windows, I might well use the visual SQL query builder and SQL command line in Alpha Anywhere. ![]() Since I have an active JetBrains subscription, I also installed DataGrip, a multi-database client tool. The free trial has limits, but it is usable and does not expire. Postico is a commercial Postgres client product for MacOS. The transactions being monitored in the postgres database are for maintenance purposes. PgAdmin 4 displays its UI in a web browser. It’s useful to add the command-line utilities for Postgres to your path. In addition to installing the latest production database version (10.5) with default configuration settings, I added the Postgres command-line utilities to my computer's path and installed both the cross-platform pgAdmin 4 and the Mac-only Postico GUI tools, as shown below. My InfoWorld colleague Serdar Yegulalp wrote a strong tutorial on installing and configuring PostgreSQL, “ Get started with PostgreSQL 10.” I used that to inform my installation on an iMac, and wound up downloading and running the Mac-only Postgres.App shown in the screenshot below. Finally, I’ll leave you with a few good references to help you take your next steps with Postgres and SQL. Along the way, I will suggest some GUI clients for Postgres you might want to use, and provide a brief overview of useful PostgreSQL extensions. ![]() To cap it all off, we’ll execute a query against two related tables by using SQL join clauses. In this tutorial, we will step through installing PostgreSQL, connecting to the database, loading some data, and running a variety of SQL queries. I can pronounce Postgres I never know whether to say Post-gres-Q-L or Post-gres-sequel. You can also find a hosted high-performance version of PostgreSQL in Amazon Aurora, and a wire-compatible distributed implementation in CockroachDB.įrom here on in, I will use the names PostgreSQL and Postgres (not all-caps) interchangeably, as is the general practice. You can install it on Linux (all recent distributions), Windows (Windows 2000 SP4 and later), FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, MacOS, AIX, HP/UX, and Solaris. With more than 20 years of development and deployment behind it, PostgreSQL is a solid open-source database that rivals even commercial relational databases in many respects. Users can extend PostgreSQL with new data types, functions, operators, aggregate functions, index methods, and procedural languages. PostgreSQL is an open-source, object-relational (also called extended relational) database management system. Modern relational database features in PostgreSQL include complex queries, foreign keys, triggers, updatable views, transactional integrity, and multi-version concurrency control. ![]() A house water network often gets in the way of piping later game fluids like juice or medicine.īelts are really only strictly local. Piping water to houses is generally not worth the effort past the early game because it only gives you +1 happiness, and you have more than enough happiness. This is also why coin-bonus and steam-bonus boosters have little value, they act like artificial workers. It multiplies the labor output of citizens, but once your happiness gets above a fairly low threshold, you typically have more workers available than you need. Happiness, in contrast, isn’t all that important. This is your main incentive to ship goods long distances - because all the goods of a particular type are coming from one town. This is particularly pronounced for Knowledge towns.īecause you never have enough towns to get bonuses for every possible production chain, you shouldn’t duplicate town specialties, and any production chains that match a bonus should be inside that town’s radius.Ī corollary is that production chains that don’t match the town’s bonus need to go elsewhere if you don’t have enough room for all the chains that should go there. This stacks, so if you’ve got a 3-step process, you’re getting 8x the production from the same raw material. You get up to +100% (x2) output for the same material if the item matches the town’s bonus. ![]() The main source of efficiency is town bonuses. I'm already trying double/triple lane paths for wagons and caravans but it just doesn't feel as efficient as using belts but that leads to a lot of spaghetti unless you are keeping buildings directly next to each other. I'm already experimenting with vertical construction, especially with houses (making sure to pipe up water, naturally) but the lack of direct vertical transmission of solid goods outside of silo chaining is making me hesitant to make it a priority especially in early game. Overall I'd love to see some examples of more optimized production, if they exist. It seems to be more efficient than trying to mass produce and ship out raw materials/intermediate products (like cloaks and books) but I've yet to delve into packagers because of my whole "localized production" mentality. Take Factorio for example, where the general strategy is to have a main bus of your resources running down your factory (until megabase level but that's a whole other discussion) and that clearly wouldn't work for Factory Town due to belt throughput and the sheer number of different resources.Ĭurrently I'm just making little localized production chains for each new tech tier, for example the Magic Knowledge I added another school to receive the Knowledge, and built the whole production chain for cloaks and books etc right nearby even though I have those things being made elsewhere already. I've played it a fair bit and gotten a custom map up to tech level 7 but I feel like I'm not playing the game in an optimal fashion. The Mana Pipes and Omni Pipes must go into storage to be useable. So I've been playing a lot of these types of games and I'm having a hard time grasping the basic mentality of this one. Goods from the Magic Forge to to the Enchanter (Mana Crystal), Mage Tower (Mana Crystal, Mana Brick, Mana Pipe), Elemental Refinery (Mana Crystal), Medicine Hut (Mana Crystal), and Specialty Goods (Mana Brick). Fuel comes from the Pasture (1 unit, Fertilizer), Forester (2 unit, Wood), Mine (4 unit, Coal), or Fire Shrine (8 unit, Magma). The buildings that provide goods for the Magic Forge are the Stone Mason (Stone Brick), Mines (Mana Shard), Forge (Steam Pipe), and Mana Reactor (Omnistone). This building has a maximum of 5 workers, and Blue Coin, Steam, and Fire boosters. Mana Bricks are required to build most of the buildings that have magical utilities. The Magic Forge is the Building that indroduces the late game, and provides power to many other buildings in the form of Mana Crystals that are often transported through the Mana (or later, Omni) Pipes it makes. ![]() Setting up in Venture Ridge, Wyoming, he was present in their facility whilst they prepared the devices. Using Abomination's biology, AIM were able to develop a method of creating similar creatures to him. At Rappaccini's behest, Abomination was spared, as they still needed his help in their operations. When Tarleton seemingly refused to answer, Blonsky lost his temper and attacked him, only to be caught and strangled by one of his mechanical arms. After watching the former fail to defeat them and Tony Stark at Golden Acres, he chastised them for not allowing him to murder them. Though he survived, the brutality displayed by Hulk made Kamala question with Blonsky had died.Ībomination was later recovered by AIM, assisting George Tarleton and Monica Rappaccini in tracking down Banner and Khan. Eventually, Abomination was defeated after repeatedly hit and crushed under machinery. The two fought throughout the facility, including laboratories and power grids. However, Hulk intercepted him, leading Blonsky to turn his attention towards his predecessor. After the former recovered JARVIS's hard drive, he confronted her and prepared to attack. When Kamala Khan and the Hulk attacked the Olympia Archive facility, Abomination was authorized by Tarleton to confront them. Unlike Banner, Blonsky retained his memories and intelligence, though was dubbed the Abomination. The experiment transformed him permanently into an extremely strong and physically imposing monster similar to the Hulk. With AIM growing in size, Blonsky volunteered for their human gamma experiments under the direction of Monica Rappaccini. Some time after doing so, Blonsky was employed by the laboratory firm Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) as a security guard. He kept his past secret, which prevented others from becoming close to him. Eventually, he immigrated to the United States for a fresh start. In his adult life, Emil Blonsky served as military spy, mercenary and fought in an unspecified war. As he grew up, he learned that by violence, not just threats. Most will list which electronics they accept-and some may even offer to help bring heavy TVs inside. If curbside removal isn’t an option, try searching for nearby recycling centers and checking their websites. There’s a good chance you’ll be able to leave your TV on the curb with your other recycling, but it may incur a fee (and if you’re renting, you should give your apartment manager or landlord notice about the upcoming expense). Fortunately, most people should have several options for recycling their old TV.Įach state and county has different guidelines for recycling, so you should start by Googling your city’s television recycling options. A TV needs to be processed at a facility that’s equipped to disassemble it. Our picks tend to excel at these tests, but they also need to be priced reasonably and not introduce any hardware, compatibility, or user-experience issues once they’re in your home.Ī TV can be recycled into a number of components, including copper wiring, plastic, and glass, so you should never just throw it in a trash dumpster. These measurements aren’t the sole indicator of a good TV, and they are not the only thing we take into account when recommending TVs, but they make up a healthy portion of what we test. Is its production of white light too red- or blue-tinted? Does it produce enough color for HDR content? Is it clipping off details on either end of the light spectrum? With one scan, we can get a good estimate of how a TV’s picture quality compares to the scientific standards. We use Portrait Displays’ Calman software a program specifically designated for display measurement and calibration, to tabulate those measurements into easily readable charts and tables. ![]() When we measure TVs, we use a device called a signal generator to send test patterns to the screen, plus a meter (usually a tristimulus colorimeter) to measure the light and colors that the TV produces. Major deviations from any of these targets can ruin a TV’s image and obscure details. Modern TVs should produce a white point that’s exactly 6500 K, roughly the flavor of unclouded daylight. A specific color temperature, designated in Kelvin, dictates how grayscale elements should look. There are also targets for the hue, saturation, and brightness of a TV’s primary colors (red, green, and blue) and secondary colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow), depending on whether the SDR or HDR color spaces are being used for what you’re watching. For example, we have behavioral targets for functions called gamma (for SDR video) and electro-optical transfer function (or EOTF, for HDR video), which specify how much light a TV should produce across a range of electrical stimulus levels. But what does it mean to have “scientific” standards for TVs? Essentially, it boils down to light and color production, two stimuli that can be easily measured.įor both SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR (high dynamic range) content, there are designated light and color targets that a TV should hit. Scientific standards for HDTV performance have been in place since 1990, and scientific standards for UHD TV performance have been in place since 2015. Knowing some of these basic points before you start shopping around can simplify the process and narrow down your viable options. If you’re buying for a bedroom, you probably don’t need a huge screen.Īnd if your intended room is especially bright, you may want to spring for a premium LCD TV since such models get a lot brighter than budget LCD TVs or OLED TVs. If you’re not planning on playing video games or watching Blu-ray discs, you probably don’t need a TV with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which tends to raise the price. How much control do you have over competing light, such as from lamps and windows?.What’s the right screen size for the room?.What kind of content are you going to watch?.So start by asking yourself a few questions: The key thing to know about modern TVs is that shopping for a new one is less about avoiding a lemon and more about making sure you aren’t paying for features you don’t need or won’t use.īut the good news is that even affordable TVs tend to look excellent if you just want the basics. One benefit of using this method is that it guarantees that all rows will be in ascending order. Use the AUTOINCREMENT KeywordĪlternatively, you can choose to explicitly set the column to auto-increment by using the AUTOINCREMENT keyword. Therefore, in such cases, you can’t rely on this column if you need to order the table in ascending or descending order, based on the order of which the rows were inserted.įortunately, if this is a problem for you, there is a solution: The AUTOINCREMENT keyword. There’s a possibility that some rows will have a higher value than rows inserted at a later date. If an unused key can’t be found, the INSERT operation fails with an SQLITE_FULL error.īasically what this means is, if you allow DELETE operations in the table, then there’s no guarantee that all rows will be in order. ![]() This typically means that it will reuse old keys that were previously deleted. If the largest value of the column is the largest possible integer (9223372036854775807), then SQLite will choose an unused key at random. If the table is empty, the value will be 1. The way it works is, the NULL is automatically converted into an integer which is one greater than the largest value of that column over all other rows in the table. In other words, AUTOINCREMENT only inserts a value if you don’t. It’s important to note that you can override the AUTOINCREMENT value by inserting your own value. Now, when I insert NULL into that column, the CatId column auto-increments: INSERT INTO Cats VALUES This is because it has been defined using INTEGER PRIMARY KEY. In this table, the CatId column is an autoincrement column. Automatically Create an Auto-Increment Columnīy default, when you define a column as INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, it will auto-increment whenever you insert NULL into that column. This article explains how to create AUTOINCREMENT columns in SQLite. This is similar to an IDENTITY column in SQL Server or an AUTO_INCREMENT column in MySQL. By auto-incrementing columns, I mean columns that increment automatically whenever new data is inserted. SQLite has an interesting way of handling auto-increment columns.
